How we score
Every machine gets 0 to 100 points. The score compares it with all 115 machines on this site, spec by spec. Nobody can pay for a better score.
Where the data comes from
We list espresso machines that sell on Amazon US. Specs come from two sources. First choice is the manufacturer’s own website: we only take a value if it is written on a page of the brand’s own domain, and we re-check every value against that page automatically. Where the manufacturer says nothing, we use the Amazon listing. Each spec on a machine’s page shows its source. If neither source states a spec, we show “Not stated”. We do not fill gaps from memory or guesswork. Sales and price history come from Keepa, a price tracker for Amazon.
What counts, and how much
- Built-in grinder (weight 10): Fresh grinding right before brewing matters more for taste than almost anything else. A built-in grinder saves buying a separate one.
- Grind settings (weight 4): More steps let you fine-tune extraction for different beans. Below about 15 steps, dialing in espresso gets hard.
- Heating system (weight 12): Dual boilers and heat exchangers can brew and steam at the same time with stable temperature. Thermoblocks heat fast but drift more.
- PID temperature control (weight 10): A PID controller holds brew water within about one degree. Unstable temperature is the most common cause of sour or bitter shots.
- Adjustable brew temperature (weight 4): Light roasts like hotter water, dark roasts cooler. Without adjustment you are stuck with one setting.
- Pre-infusion (weight 6): Wetting the coffee puck at low pressure before full pressure evens out extraction and forgives small tamping mistakes.
- Portafilter size (weight 6): 58 mm is the café standard with the widest choice of baskets and tampers. Smaller sizes work, but accessories are scarcer.
- Pressure gauge (weight 3): A gauge shows whether your grind and dose are right while the shot runs.
- Brews two cups at once (weight 3): Handy when you make coffee for two.
- Milk frothing (weight 10): A manual steam wand gives the best microfoam for latte art but takes practice. Automatic systems are easier but less flexible.
- Heat-up time (weight 8): How long you wait from switching on until the first shot. Under a minute feels instant, over 15 minutes means planning ahead.
- Water tank (weight 6): A bigger tank means refilling less often. For two milk drinks a day, about 60 oz lasts several days.
- Bean hopper (weight 2): How many beans the built-in grinder holds.
- One-touch drinks (weight 5): Preset recipes such as latte or cappuccino at the push of a button.
- Hot water outlet (weight 2): For Americanos and tea without a kettle.
- Cup warmer (weight 2): Warm cups keep espresso hot longer.
- App control (weight 1): Remote start and recipe settings from your phone.
- Popularity (weight 5): how much the machine sells on Amazon US compared with the others.
Numbers such as water tank size are scored by where a machine stands among all machines: the biggest tank gets close to full marks, the smallest close to none. Yes/no features score full marks for yes. Unstated specs count as a quarter mark, because in most cases a missing spec means the feature is missing.
What we do not score
Pump pressure: Espresso is brewed at about 9 bar. Higher numbers on the box are maximum pump ratings and do not make better coffee, so we do not score them.
Height: Measure the space under your kitchen cabinets. Many machines need a few extra inches on top to refill the water tank or bean hopper.
Counter space: Width times depth, the area the machine takes up on your counter.
Weight: Heavier machines stay put when you lock in the portafilter. Lighter ones are easier to move and store.
Power: Higher wattage usually means faster heating, but it says nothing about coffee quality.
What the score cannot tell you
We have not tested these machines in a lab. The score shows which machine has the better specs on paper. Build quality, durability and service are not part of it.
Deal check
We compare today’s Amazon price with its own history: the 90-day average and the lowest price of the last 12 months. We show the result, not the price itself. Amazon allows prices on partner sites only from its own interface, and the price can change at any moment, so the exact price is always on Amazon.
